
In the last blog, Meditation Series - Part 12 - Techniques For Practise Of Common Types Of Meditation - Postures, we looked at how postures can assist with the flow of energy around the body. Mudras perform a similar task.
With regards to hand gestures, the electromagnetic link is created when the thumb and one of the fingers of the same hand touch.
The five elements; earth, air, fire, water and aakaash (ether, or the intercellular spaces within the body) are contained in the body. When one of these elements are out of balance, disease is caused.
The link circulates energy continuously in a circle between the two digits. By establishing this connection of electromagnetic currents within the body that relate to the various elements, health can be restored.
- Thumb - Fire
- Index - Air
- Middle - Aakaash
- Ring - Earth
- Little - Water
When meditating, the thumb and index finger mudra are commonly used as the air element relates to the mind and emotions.
You may like to incorporate using mudras into your meditation practise by using all of just one of the mudras while meditating. Perhaps using a different mudra each time you meditate will give you some insight on their effect.
