Prayer, which is a technique of the mind, is quiet different from Contemplative Meditation which is a technique of feeling, and was discussed in the previous blog Meditation Series - Part 6 - Techniques For Practise Of Common Types Of Meditation - Contemplative Meditation. What they have in common, is that their focus is on communicating with god.
- To send love and requests of healing through god to another person
- To request assistance and/or understanding on a topic or issue
- To receive love, comfort or healing
- To be able to communicate and express all that is on the mind
- To seek conformation and re-assurance on a topic or issue
Prayer can be practised at any time, and it may be as short as a word or two or as long as an in-depth conversation.
A typical image is of somebody on their knees at their bed, hands held together at the heart with fingers pointing upward, at night before sleep. This is a wonderful time to pray as it suggests that you are dedicating time each day to pro-actively practise, and not simply when in need. As it is before bedtime, the last thing this is on the mind before sleep is the prayer. If there are answers to be sought, god may provide these in the form of dreams or simply feelings of resolution when one awakes. It is well known that one sleeps better when issues or concerns are not being 'slept on' but are being voiced before hand. Prayer provides a perfect way to exercise this practise.
