Reiki It had been a few months since my very first ever reiki healing (see Reiki Series - Part 2 - Experiences Of My First Reiki Healing). Although I had now had received 4 or 5 reiki treatments, I was still unsure as to what was occurring during the sessions, and for what seemed up to a week after. There was a certain lightness I felt, as if my edges were softer and I began to be able to easily work through and let go of things that I had previously found difficult.
I had many questions. In particular, 'what was actually going on?' My reiki practitioner suggested now I that now take her Reiki Level 1 Workshop which, she said, would begin to answer my long and ever-increasing list of questions. What I didn't realise until years later was that this was the beginning of a huge spiritual development curve in my life. I would never be the same person after it......

I eagerly awaited the date for my new and exciting reiki workshop, which I still really didn't know anything about, to arrive. I was a little nervous as I wondered if I would actually be able to 'channel' the energy. What happened if I failed? What happened if I didn't pass the reiki course? Was there an exam? Would I have to prove myself in order to receive a certificate? Who could I actually talk to about this invisible stuff, after I had gone home?
As I arrived at the workshop venue, there were already three other cars there. I felt a sense of belonging as I walked into the room. I met what was to be my new reiki family for the weekend! Two of the four other participants told me that they had already participated in Reiki Level 1 and 2 Workshops previously. They said they were excited about re-sittitng the workshop as they were going to be training to become Reiki Master/Teachers. I must have looked quiet nervous at the prospect of sitting for a reiki certificate with experienced participants, as one of them gently re-assured me that I would be a wonderful reiki practitioner and that I could relax and that this wasn't a university degree course!
The weekend began and I learned all about Usui Reiki, it's history and what it was all about. I began to feel a sense of belonging to something really special. Knowing that I was now part of the Usui Reiki Lineage (similar to a family tree) brought about a sense of pride and deep respect. I knew within that that every time I used reiki, I was committing to be 100% diligent that my mind, emotions and energy were concentrating solely on the person I was working on. That this was a precious and sacred practise that I was partaking in.
Throughout the weekend were were initiated with a series of 'attunements' which were symbols that were imbedded into each of our aura/energetic field. Up until now, the reiki workshop was theory on reiki, chakras, the aura and hand positions on giving reiki treatments. Each participant, one by one, was attuned. After their first attunement, one participant came out with eyes full of wonder and excitement. He had seen many colours and flashes of white light. Then, he said he felt a bolt of energy move through him, from the top of his head (crown chakra) right down through his feet and out into the floor.
When I had my attunement, I got nothing......... no flashes, no sensations, not a thing, nothing....... I oscillated between feeling intense disappointment and sadness that I wasn't good enough to be a reiki practitioner. Was I too blocked? Was the universe telling me that this wasn't to be a part of my life path? Was I just simply not sensitive enough to experience the wonders that my fellow participant had?
I discussed this with my reiki teacher and she gently and lovingly explained to me that every attunement is different. That, because I was now attuned, could be just as good a reiki practitioner as anybody else, regardless of what I was or was not seeing/feeling/sensing. She continued to remind me that reiki energy is channelled through us, that we were simply a device in which the energy is directed at another person. It is for that reason that we didn't need to feel or sense anything as long as our intention is to be a loving channel for universal life-force energy, and that our attention was focused on asking for whatever healing would serve the person's higher good.
The weekend continued with further attunements, and much time for practising giving and receiving reiki healing with the other participants until I felt quite confident I could practise on myself, family and friends. I went home with new friends, a sense of purpose in my life and excitement on discovering what lay ahead for my new life.
Reiki is usually the first modality that people train in with regards to spiritual development. Why do you think this is the case, and are there other modalities that you feel could benefit as a first modality instead?
