![]() There are many energy healing modalities to choose from. So why is reiki so special? Firstly, Reiki healing has a lineage that can be directly followed from its discoverer, all the way down the teaching line to you. Secondly, it has been around long enough that it has an established reputation as a reputable healing modality. Thirdly, it is new enough that there are photos of it's discoverer and all those in its lineage. What this means is that reiki is new enough that its history can be documented as true and not just a folk story, but old enough to not be a fly-by-the-night modality. You may also wish to read my previous blog, Reiki Series - Part 4 - Effects After Participating In Reiki 1 Workshop. You may notice that there seems to be new healing modalities popping up every year. Every time I go to a new age and psychic expo, there is always some new and exciting modality on offer. Some of the energetic workshops and courses I have seen on offer look fantastic and I am sure will continue to grow both in popularity and reputation. Others, however, seem to disappear within a few months.
The benefit of taking an energetic healing course or workshop that has its roots deep in history is that it hasn't withered away into nothingness. This suggests that there is some validity in its claims to work. It wouldn't have continued for so long if people didn't believe in it. The problem, however, is that they are often so far back in history that it is hard to confirm what the original healing modality was, whether it has changed over time and whether its history has also been preserved or changed. You may wonder why I find importance in reiki healing being both old enough and new enough. I believe that a good vibrational therapies practitioner needs to really embrace their healing modality/s of choice as not only a part of their lives, but a part of their being. To do this we need to feel a sense of belonging to the energetic modality, just like feeling that we belong to our family. To feel a sense of belonging gets us involved personally and emotionally. We really care about and have deep respect for the modality, for what it is, and how it can help others. As reiki has a proud lineage, with documented history of the lives of the founders who passed it down to us, it becomes tangible for us. We can connect to the people in the photos and see that there is only a few people connecting between Dr Usui, the discoverer or reiki, and us. We can identify ourselves as being part of this family and it is wonderful to know that we truly belong. That once we obtain our reiki mastership, our name goes down on paper in history as being a part of the lineage. I personally try to train in courses and take workshops of modalities that have been established for a minimum of 30 years. For me, this is enough time for them to grow foundations and establish themselves as long-term modalities or be weeded out for a variety of reasons (such as perhaps simply being different versions on an already established theme). Do you think that an energetic modalities history is important? Or simply 'nice to know'?
